The Woman King Movie is an American historical epic film about an all-female fighting force known as the Agojie that defended the West African kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The movie was released in 2022.
The movie takes place in the 1820s, and Viola Davis plays the role of a commander who prepares a new generation of soldiers to face off against the country’s adversaries. Adapted from their own screenplay, co-authored by Maria Bello and Dana Stevens, the film is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Stevens. The film also features the talents of Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.
